Otter Mound Preserve
A short history walk on a Calusa shell mound
The Local’s Take
A 2.45-acre county preserve near the island's southeast tip, set on a Calusa shell mound under tropical hardwood hammock. A short mulched trail passes the whelk-shell walls that former owner Ernest Otter built along the mound's old ridges in the mid-1900s; the walls are fragile, so stay on the trail and leave shells and artifacts where they lie. Parking is a few spaces at the Addison Court entrance, with a bike rack (no riding inside), and there are no restrooms.
